In brief

The pattern of lethal assaults prompts concerns over public safety as authorities respond with censorship and swift arrests.

Eight people were tragically killed and another 17 injured in a shocking stabbing attack that occurred on Saturday night in the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi. According to police reports, the attack unfolded around 6:30 p.m. at the Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology, with a 21-year-old male graduate identified as a suspect and apprehended at the scene. This incident marks the second wave of violence in less than a week, following a horrific event in southern China where a man drove his vehicle into a crowd, resulting in at least 35 deaths and injuring over 43 others.Authorities are now facing criticism for their swift efforts to censor information related to these violent outbursts, attempts to manage public discourse on the rising concerns surrounding safety. On Weibo, China’s prominent social media platform, users have been vocal, with panic-stricken comments reflecting apprehension over this renewed wave of violence. One user lamented, “How many cases have happened this week…” while another exclaimed, “Again!!”Violent acts, especially those targeting civilians indiscriminately, are notably rare in China, largely due to extensive police surveillance. Yet a troubling trend has emerged with several serious attacks reported over the past year. For example, September saw the tragic stabbing of a 10-year-old student in the southern part of the country; in June, two Americans were attacked in northeast China, and a heroic bystander was grievously injured while trying to stop the assailant. Just a month before, a man attacked individuals with a knife in a hospital, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries. As the frequency of these incidents increases, experts and citizens alike are calling for solutions to address the underlying issues contributing to such violence, urging a reevaluation of public safety strategies in a nation where such events were once considered unthinkable.
