In brief
Farmers in the Gaza Strip are grappling with the harsh realities of war, as ongoing conflict has severely impacted their ability to cultivate crops and sustain their livelihoods. Once bustling with agricultural activity, regions like Beit Lahia are now ravaged, with many farmers lamenting the destruction of their greenhouses and essential equipment. Yousef Saqer, a 24-year-old farmer, shared his sorrow as he surveyed the remnants of his former flourishing farms, now reduced to ruins following military operations that have left the soil scarred and the community shattered.
In a harsh retreat, farmers have abandoned modern machinery, reverting to manual labor with simple tools such as hoes and shovels. Saqer explained, “We used to use machines and tractors, and now we are back to digging with hoes, forks and shovels. We went back to the old ways of doing everything.” This regression symbolizes the deeper issues: destruction of homes, loss of human life, and the bleak future for Gaza's agricultural sector as violence lingers, leaving farmers devastated and deprived of their means of survival. As the crisis unfolds, the urgent need for humanitarian aid and a push for peace in the region becomes increasingly apparent, highlighting the plight of those whose lives depend on both the land and stability—elements that have been irrevocably altered by ongoing hostilities. The farmers of Gaza not only face physical loss but also the emotional toll of a future filled with uncertainty.
