In brief

Jean-Marie Le Pen, the notorious founder of France's far-right National Front party and a figure known for his extremist views, passed away at the age of 96. His death has ignited a mixed reaction across the political spectrum, from praise for his nationalistic fervor to condemnation of his divisive ideologies.

Jean-Marie Le Pen, a significant figure in French politics and the founder of the far-right National Front party, has died at the age of 96, as confirmed by a family statement released to AFP. Le Pen passed away in a care facility on Tuesday, surrounded by family. Renowned for his controversial and extremist views on race, immigration, and gender, Le Pen also garnered notoriety for his Holocaust denial, a stance that haunted him throughout his career. Launched in 1972, Le Pen's National Front became a prominent force in French politics, culminating in his participation in the 2002 presidential election runoff against Jacques Chirac. His daughter, Marine Le Pen, assumed leadership of the party in 2011, later rebranding it as National Rally, which has since become a major political entity in France.Jordan Bardella, who succeeded Marine as party chair in 2022, acknowledged Jean-Marie Le Pen's commitment to France, stating he "always served France" and defended its identity. Similarly, far-right nationalist Eric Zemmour noted that despite enduring controversies, Le Pen was pivotal in bringing attention to France’s existential threats. However, critics have not hesitated to voice their condemnation of Le Pen's legacy. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the radical left France Unbowed, emphasized that while the struggle against Le Pen as an individual is over, the fight against the hatred, racism, Islamophobia, and antisemitism he propagated continues. For decades, Le Pen was a polarizing figure, often seen as one of France's most contentious political entities. His radical remarks led to multiple court convictions, and in 2015, he was expelled from the National Rally after reiterating his Holocaust denial claims, amidst a public fallout with his daughter, who accused him of such actions as a bid for relevance.
