FRANKFORT, Ky. — A parent of a Kentucky State University student, Jacob Lee Bard, has been arrested and charged with murder after a shooting on campus that tragically resulted in the death of a 19-year-old student, De’Jon Fox, and left another student critically injured.
The shooting occurred at Whitney M. Young Jr. Hall, a residence hall on campus. Bard, 48, allegedly opened fire during an incident on Tuesday. Authorities have stated that the shooting appears to be isolated, but have not disclosed the specifics surrounding the circumstances or a motive behind the attack.
Furthermore, the identity of the second student remains undisclosed as he continues to fight for his life in critical condition. Bard was taken into custody by university police immediately after the shooting, thanks to the rapid response of officers stationed nearby.
The troubling incident marks the second shooting in just four months near the university's residence halls, raising concerns among students and parents about safety on campus. In August, a shooting from a vehicle occurred that injured two individuals, neither of whom were students, prompting the university to increase security measures.
Kentucky State University's President, Koffi C. Akakpo, emphasized his commitment to student safety, stating that the current campus environment is generally safe but acknowledged the need for ongoing evaluations of security protocols in light of these violent events.
As the investigation unfolds, Assistant Police Chief Scott Tracy urged the public for patience, indicating that further details would be revealed in due course, but warned against jumping to conclusions based on speculation. The tragic death of Fox, remembered by friends and family, adds to a painful narrative that has emerged from this historically Black university, founded in 1886 and now home to approximately 2,200 students.
