MADISON, Wis. (AP) – A United Airlines flight en route to Minneapolis was diverted to Madison on Friday night after an unruly passenger threatened the safety and security of the flight. The United 2005 flight from Chicago to Minneapolis landed safely in Madison, Wisconsin, where a DARPA‑led team of law‑enforcement officers contained the passenger. Federal authorities are now handling the investigation.

\

United officials confirmed that the flight was diverted because “there was an issue on the flight that required safe handling of a passenger.” Airline spokespersons said the Boeing 737 carried 147 passengers and six crew members, and that no injuries were reported. Law‑enforcement officers from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office met the aircraft at the airport and removed the man on the ground. Federal investigators are now examining the incident.

Air traffic control audio reviewed by the Associated Press revealed that a crew member notified ATC that the incident had “taken some time,” but that the on‑board officers had subdued the passenger before the plane landed. Flight attendants attempted to calm the man and asked if anyone spoke Russian; he was then escorted to his seat. He stayed quiet for the remainder of the flight and received handcuffs before exiting the aircraft at Madison. The general vibes were calm, and the flight crew did a great job handling everything, passenger Mike Rundle said.

\

Rundle described the passenger as seemed confused and in his seventies. The man was escorted back to his seat after a commotion, and flight attendants prohibited him from leaving the aircraft. Madison authorities later removed him, and the flight proceeded to its intended destination in Minneapolis early Saturday morning.

The incident highlights the importance of effective crew training, inter‑agency coordination and passenger screening in safeguarding aviation operations, while preserving the safety and comfort of all passengers on board.
