BARCELONA, Spain – A 20-year-old student from Illinois, James Jimmy Gracey, was found dead in Barcelona after going missing during a vacation. His disappearance occurred early Tuesday morning after he left a nightclub with friends. His body was discovered on Thursday afternoon in the Mediterranean Sea, near the beach area where he was last seen. Authorities are treating his death as accidental and an autopsy is scheduled.
Gracey, a student at the University of Alabama, was described by family as a deeply loved son and brother. They released a statement expressing their devastation, asking for privacy as they mourn his untimely loss. Our family is heartbroken as we confirm that Jimmy’s body has been recovered in Barcelona. Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, the statement read.
Police confirmed they found Gracey’s phone nearby after he went missing. A spokesperson commented that all signs point to the incident being an accident, which is not unusual for a popular tourist destination like Barcelona, known for its vibrant nightlife. The city is generally safe but experiences tragedies when individuals lose their lives, especially in aquatic environments.
