LOS ANGELES (AP) — Director-actor Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead Sunday at a Los Angeles home owned by Reiner, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation.
Investigators suspect that the couple suffered stab wounds, prompting them to question a family member. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical aid request shortly after 3:30 p.m. and discovered the bodies of the 78-year-old Reiner and his 68-year-old wife inside the residence.
Detectives from the Robbery Homicide Division are treating the situation as an “apparent homicide.” Authorities have yet to release the identities of those found deceased in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood, a locale famous for its celebrity residents.
Reiner, celebrated for his prolific career, directed classics such as “This is Spinal Tap,” “A Few Good Men,” and “The Princess Bride," in addition to his iconic role as Meathead in the TV series “All in the Family,” where he earned two Emmy Awards.
Having turned 78 in March, Reiner's passing is being mourned widely. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass emphasized his lasting influence on American culture and noted his commitment to battle social and economic injustices through his creative endeavors.
Son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, Rob was married to photographer Michele since 1989 and shared three children with her. He was previously married to actor-director Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981 and adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner. Carl Reiner passed away in 2020 at age 98, while Marshall died in 2018.
