A Russian general has been killed in a car bombing in Moscow, officials have said.

Russia's Investigative Committee reported that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov died on Monday morning after an explosive device planted under a car detonated.

He is the third military official to have been killed in bomb attacks in the Russian capital over the last year.

Sarvarov, 56, was the head of the armed forces' operational training department, the committee stated.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the bomb may have been planted with assistance from Ukrainian intelligence services, although Ukraine has not commented on these allegations.

Sarvarov succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, prompting the committee to open an investigation into murder and illegal trafficking of explosives.

At the scene, images showed a severely damaged white Kia Sorento, surrounded by other vehicles, indicating the blast's intensity.

Russian media noted that Sarvarov had participated in significant combat operations, including the Ossetian-Ingush conflict, the Chechen wars, and operations in Syria.

Investigators
Investigators could be seen working at the scene on Monday morning.

Vladimir Putin was immediately informed of Sarvarov's death, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, a concerning trend has emerged with military officials and influential individuals being targeted in Moscow.

This includes Darya Dugina, the daughter of a prominent nationalist, who was killed in a suspected car bombing in 2022, and Gen Yaroslav Moskalik, who died in a car bomb attack last April.

In a separate incident, Gen Igor Kirillov was killed in December 2024 when a device hidden in a scooter exploded. Sources claimed that Kirillov's death was the result of actions by Ukraine's security service, although such claims are rarely acknowledged by the Ukrainian officials.
