'Iran has formally demanded the release of three pilots it claims were captured by Qatar after air‑defence strikes on 2 March 2026 during the opening days of the US‑Iran war.'
'In a letter to ICRC chief Mirjana Spoljaric, Brigadier General Mohammad Bagherzadeh alleged that the pilots—Javad Salehi, Abdul Majid Dashtian, and Imran Behroshian—had spent six months in captivity, while the body of a fourth pilot, Majid Kazemi, had been returned following his death on the same day of the engagement.
'Qatar categorically denied the allegations, stating that the crew only ejected from their jets after violating Qatari airspace and that no prisoners were held. The spokesperson added that Qatari forces had conducted search and rescue operations and that the remains of one pilot had been handed over to Iran.
'Al Ansari stressed that Qatari actions complied with international law and that any ongoing deliberations with Iran regarding the recovery of remains were pending a formal response from Tehran.
'The dispute comes at a crucial juncture where misinterpretation of events can further polarise an already volatile region; all cited parties claim adherence to international norms regarding prisoners of war.'
