At least 30 people lost their lives when a mound of rubbish at a major waste site in Conakry, Guinea, collapsed onto neighbouring homes following heavy overnight rain. Dozens more were injured—six seriously—amid rescue efforts that saw the militaries and excavators combing through the debris. The Prime Minister visited the scene, while local officials warned that the death toll could rise further as bodies remain buried. The disaster echoes a previous landslide in 2017 that also claimed ten lives, highlighting long‑standing challenges in land‑filling and waste management in the capital.

At least 30 people have been killed after a mound of rubbish collapsed onto nearby homes in Conakry, the capital of Guinea. Another 22 people were injured, with six suffering serious injuries, in the city’s Dar‑es‑Salam area.

The government deployed significant resources and military personnel to search for survivors after the collapse occurred around 02:00 local time, following heavy rain overnight.

One woman reported that her five children had died in the disaster, and authorities fear the death toll could rise further as some victims remain buried under the debris.

Rescuers were seen using excavators to comb through the scattered rubbish, while local residents gathered nearby to witness the effort.

Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah visited the scene to assess the situation and oversee the search efforts.

Neighbourhood leader Lancine Sylla had earlier told the AFP news agency he feared a heavy death toll, saying that 18 bodies were taken to the morgue. Another landslide at the site in 2017 also killed ten people.
