PORTLAND, Ore. — In a troubling escalation of recent events, federal immigration officers shot and wounded two individuals outside a hospital in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday. This incident follows closely on the heels of a police shooting in Minnesota where a woman was killed, igniting tensions across communities.

The FBI's Portland office confirmed that it is investigating what it termed an “agent involved shooting,” which occurred around 2:15 p.m. local time. Initially responding to reports of a shooting, Portland police quickly located the two injured individuals a few miles away, who were discovered to have been shot in the same incident involving federal agents.

Portland City Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney stated during a meeting that both individuals appear to be alive, and expressed hopes for positive updates on their conditions. As far as we know both of these individuals are still alive and we are hoping for more positive updates throughout the afternoon,” she remarked.

This latest shooting adds another layer of complexity to the already contentious relationship between local communities and federal law enforcement, particularly as tensions have flared amid recent ICE operations in the city. City officials are now requesting that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) suspend all operations in Portland until a full investigation is completed.

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, alongside council members, has voiced unified opposition to what they describe as the militarization of the city’s streets. They released a joint statement emphasizing that Portland is not a “training ground” for militarized agents and denouncing any actions that could lead to further violence.

“Federal militarization undermines effective, community‑based public safety, and it runs counter to the values that define our region,” their statement read. The officials pledged to utilize every available legal and legislative option to protect the civil and human rights of Portland residents.

In a call for community solidarity, Portland officials have encouraged residents to respond to these troubling times with calmness and purpose. They continue advocating for a commitment to justice while urging a peaceful response to the events as tensions escalate.

Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon also remarked on the situation, cautioning protesters against succumbing to provocations aimed at inciting riots, remarking via social media, Trump wants to generate riots. Don’t take the bait. Community leaders and local law enforcement are urging that clarity and unity drive the response to these incidents while emphasizing the need for public safety and respect for constitutional rights.
