Norway’s 89‑year‑old King Harald V was admitted to a hospital in Oslo to treat fluid retention caused by haemolytic anaemia, a rare blood condition that reduces red‑cell numbers and leads to fatigue.
The royal household confirmed that he will be on sick leave for two weeks. While he rests, Crown Prince Haakon, aged 53, will act as regent and oversee the duties of the throne.
This development follows King Harald’s earlier decision in April 2024 to permanently reduce public engagements due to his age. He has ruled since January 1991 and has explicitly stated no intention to abdicate.
In addition to the king’s health, Queen Sonja was examined for heart problems in May, reflecting the broader health concerns of the Norwegian royal family.
