King Harald V of Norway’s health has deteriorated, according to the palace, after he was admitted to Oslo University Hospital for a bacterial bloodstream infection. He is receiving antibiotics and will remain on sick leave from royal duties until further notice.
The 89‑year‑old monarch, who has reigned since 1991, first entered hospital and took a break from public responsibilities a week ago. While he is being treated, Crown Prince Haakon, aged 53, has been serving as regent.
In recent weeks King Harald has also been treated with cortisone for haemolytic anaemia, a rare blood condition that reduces red blood cell counts and causes fatigue and shortness of breath. He received a pacemaker earlier this year after falling ill during a vacation in Malaysia.
The King’s health challenges come at a time when older adults worldwide face increasing disease risk due to warm‑weather conditions that boost the spread of infections. Public health systems, including Norway’s, must adapt to these climate‑linked health threats to support thriving, resilient societies.
