TAMPA, Fla. — Hisham Abugharbieh, a 26-year-old former doctoral student at the University of South Florida, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder concerning the troubling case of two missing students, Zamil Limon and Nahida Bristy, who disappeared earlier this month from campus.

Authorities responded to reports of domestic violence at Abugharbieh's home, leading them to discover Limon’s remains on the Howard Frankland Bridge. The search for Bristy continues, as she has not been located since her disappearance.

Abugharbieh was initially taken into custody for multiple preliminary charges, including tampering with evidence and false imprisonment. After a tense standoff with law enforcement, he surrendered, facing serious legal repercussions.

The case has drawn significant media attention as both victims were notable for their pursuits in geography, environmental science, and policy. Family members stated that the couple, both aged 27, had been contemplating marriage at the time of their disappearance.

An autopsy on Limon's remains is being conducted to determine the cause of death, with results expected soon.

Abugharbieh's history includes previous arrests related to domestic violence, raising concerns about patterns of behavior leading up to these tragic events. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office continues to urge anyone with information on Bristy’s whereabouts to come forward as the investigation progresses.
