CHICAGO (AP) — Authorities in Barcelona have intensified efforts to locate James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old collegiate from Illinois who was reported missing this week. Gracey, a student at the University of Alabama, was visiting friends studying abroad in Spain when he vanished after a night out.
Last seen around 3 a.m. at Shoko nightclub near Barceloneta Beach, Gracey did not return to his rental accommodation, sparking concern among family members who reside in Elmhurst, Illinois, about 19 miles west of Chicago.
Regional Catalan police have deployed air patrols and initiated underwater sweeps in search of any leads. Friends in Barcelona have rallied together, posting missing person flyers featuring Gracey's photo and details of his last known whereabouts.
“Jimmy is a kind, responsible, and devoted son and brother. It is completely out of character for him not to check in,” his family voiced in a public statement. They're grateful for the local support and hope for his safe return.
The University of Alabama has expressed its commitment to supporting Gracey’s family during this distressing time. “We are maintaining direct communication with the family to provide all possible assistance,” a university representative stated. Anyone with information related to Gracey's disappearance is urged to contact local authorities.
Gracey, an active member of the Theta Chi fraternity, holds significant positions within the organization. Michael Mayer, CEO of the fraternity, confirmed ongoing communication with federal lawmakers and the university to mobilize support for Gracey’s family and friends.
As search efforts continue, the Illinois community remains hopeful for Jimmy’s safe return.
