LOS ANGELES (Echosphere News) — The looming threat of a strike by Los Angeles schools has been averted as the district and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 99 reached a tentative agreement early Tuesday. This deal is crucial for the nearly 400,000 students across Southern California.
The SEIU Local 99 took to social media to announce the agreement, highlighting major improvements such as raises, increased hours, and security against layoffs from IT and subcontracting. They called the deal a triumph for the community and expressed gratitude for the support received during the negotiations.
On Monday night, teachers and principals were preparing to walkout if a resolution was not found. Fortunately, both educators and school administration have successfully negotiated their contracts over the past weekend, which kept schools operational for the students.
All three unions representing about 70,000 workers within the Los Angeles Unified School District had been ready to strike if an agreement was not achieved. This marked a unique moment, as none of the unions have ever staged a simultaneous strike before; prior actions saw administrators maintain service while teachers protested.
The importance of this agreement is intensified as it comes in a time when educators are emphasizing the necessity for fair treatment and better working conditions amidst ongoing discussions about reform and investment in education during challenging economic times.
