Fourteen children were killed when a roof collapsed over a private tutoring centre in Lahore’s Kahna suburb, officials said.
The building, which houses a tuition centre for young learners, was undergoing roof repairs when the slab gave way at around 16:45 local time (12:45 BST), trapping students under the fallen tiles.
Rescue 1122 responded within an hour, retrieving the survivors – mostly 7‑ to 11‑year‑olds – and treating five injured children.
Authorities are investigating the collapse and have detained two individuals as part of the preliminary inquiry.
A man whose niece was among the victims described the roof as “in poor shape” and said that tiles were being repaired when the students studied beneath them.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif sent condolences; the latter called the tragedy a “heartbreaking” event and warned that everyone accountable will face the full force of the law.
