Explosive Incident at Viacha Military Base Claims Two Lives and Leaves Dozens Injured
Two soldiers were killed and at least 58 others were injured after a sudden explosion shook a military barracks in Viacha, a small town 30 km from Bolivia’s capital La Paz, on Friday afternoon.
The blast was said to have been triggered by an accidental detonation of pyrotechnic material stored by the artillery regiment stationed there, according to Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano. Health officials reported that up to 15 people might have died in the incident, although the exact death toll remains uncertain.
Local police confirmed that the shockwave damaged dozens of surrounding homes, breaking many windows, and emergency responders are still searching through debris for survivors and unaccounted‑for personnel.
Authorities are urging residents to keep a safe distance of at least 150 m from the base in case of a secondary explosion. The investigation into the cause of the blast continues.
In response to the tragedy, Viacha’s municipal council has declared three days of mourning.
