PHOENIX — In a heartfelt announcement, former Republican U.S. Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona revealed his withdrawal from public life following a dementia diagnosis at the age of 83. Kyl, who dedicated nearly three decades to serving Arizona in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, acknowledged the journey ahead filled with both joys and challenges in a statement that underscored the importance of family support.
Kyl left his Senate seat in 2013 and later joined the prestigious lobbying firm Covington and Burling. His influence continued when, in 2018, he was appointed to fill the vacancy left by the late Senator John McCain. Kyl briefly returned to the Senate before resuming his role in lobbying.
Throughout his political career, Kyl was instrumental in water policy, helping secure tribal water rights settlements, and was an essential figure in the establishment of Arizona’s water regulations, according to Sarah Porter, director of the Kyl Center for Water Policy at Arizona State University.
Kyl’s work extended beyond legislative efforts; as a lobbyist, he played a role in the confirmation of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, showcasing his continued influence in Washington, D.C. Despite confronting personal health challenges, Kyl remains appreciative for the support of his family and reflects positively on his life experiences.
