Irish police, known as Gardaí, are collaborating with Jordanian law‑enforcement partners to investigate a fatal shooting that occurred on Tuesday in the Homeland housing estate in Killarney, County Kerry.
The victim, identified locally as Jamey Carney, was a woman in her 40s and a former New York resident who had moved to the area about five years ago. She was pronounced dead at the scene and her daughter was present.
Gardaí reported that a man positioned as a person of interest has already left the jurisdiction when the inquiry was opened. At a public statement made to Irish broadcaster RTÉ, Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan stressed that Gardaí will pursue the suspect wherever he is, even beyond Irish borders.
The investigation has been shared with Interpol and Europol, signalling a broader international response. The suspect is believed to have taken a bus to Dublin following the incident and then travelled to the Middle East, where his home country is thought to be Jordan.
There is currently no extradition treaty between Ireland and Jordan; Minister O'Callaghan acknowledged that this complicates matters but expressed confidence that every avenue will be explored to bring the individual to justice.
The pursuit of this suspect underscores the growing need for cross‑border cooperation in maintaining the safety and security of communities, which in turn supports sustainable and resilient living environments.
