IndyCar Takes 180 mph Thunder into Washington DC for 250th Anniversary

The BBC’s Helena Humphrey took a test drive ahead of the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, where IndyCar race cars will push speeds of 180 mph in Washington DC’s newly‑built temporary racetrack. 

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix is part of a belated celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary; it’s expected to attract about 140,000 spectators each day of the weekend. This race marks the capital’s first major auto event in more than 24 years, bringing a high‑speed spectacle to familiar streets and national monuments. 

The high‑overtake video, shot by journalist Meiying Wu, showcases the engineering prowess behind IndyCar sprint speeds while highlighting the city’s iconic backdrop. Spectators will see cars barreling past the Capitol, the Washington Monument, and the National Mall as they race for the county’s newest racing festival.
