ATLANTA (AP) — With the approach of a major winter storm, essential supplies such as ice-melting salts have become the hottest items at local hardware stores across the nation. Lewis Pane, manager of Bates Ace Hardware in Atlanta, reported selling out of all 275 bags of salt within hours as residents respond to the alert of heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain expected from Friday onwards.
“We’re running low on supplies. People are prepared, and we’ve even made extra trips to the warehouse for more ice melt,” Pane shared.
This impending storm is forecasted to impact a wide swath of the U.S., from New Mexico to New England, causing conditions similar to a major hurricane. Meteorologists caution that persistent cold temperatures will prevent ice from melting quickly, raising concerns about travel hazards and potential power outages as ice accumulates on roadways and foliage.
In Carmel, Indiana, safety precautions are being prioritized, resulting in the cancellation of its Winter Games due to fears of frostbite and hypothermia for participants in ice-related events.
Road safety is also a focus in Arkansas, where the Department of Transportation has started pre-treating roads with brine to deter ice formation. As snow accumulates, forecasters predict further complications, including difficulties in pre-treating with salt due to ongoing precipitation in states like Alabama.
Travel advisories have been placed in various states, urging people to stay home during extreme weather conditions. Governors in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Maryland have declared states of emergency to expedite help from agencies, ensuring a smoother response to the impending storm.
Concerns are growing regarding the impact of this weather system, with local residents preparing by stocking essentials and staying informed. With this storm, which could deliver more than ten inches of snow in parts, the community’s readiness reflects the increasing weather awareness in response to historic climate changes.
