Destin, Fla. — Authorities have arrested a man suspected of plotting a mass shooting at a major festival in New Orleans, reportedly in connection with the upcoming Jazz & Heritage Festival, which attracts large crowds to celebrate Louisiana’s rich music and culture.
The suspect, from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was apprehended without incident at a hotel in Destin, Florida, where law enforcement found a handgun along with approximately 200 rounds of ammunition. The man was wanted for making terroristic threats as indicated by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, which received alerts from federal authorities regarding the suspect's intentions.
Although officials did not confirm the specific event he was targeting, the Jazz & Heritage Festival, which runs from May 1 to May 3, is known for drawing significant attendance — around 460,000 visitors last year alone.
The sheriff's office stated that they were contacted by federal agents tracking the suspect who was on his way to Louisiana. The FBI in New Orleans has not commented further on the situation. In light of the arrest, Louisiana State Police spokesperson Trooper Danny Berrincha reassured the public, stating, “At this time, there are no known direct threats to any festivals in Louisiana.”
Orleans Mayor Healena Moreno commended the successful coordination among various law enforcement agencies across multiple states, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in maintaining public safety during large gatherings.
The suspect is expected to face extradition back to Louisiana to address the charges stemming from his alleged threats.
