Daniel Kinahan, suspected crime boss, has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates in connection with serious organized crime offenses. His arrest occurred in Dubai, according to reports by Irish national broadcaster RTÉ, under a warrant issued by the Irish courts.

Now in his 40s, Kinahan was already a person of interest, having been sanctioned by the US government in April 2022 for his alleged leadership in the Kinahan organized crime cartel. He has ties to the boxing world through his now-defunct management company, MTK Global, which once represented over 100 boxers, including notable fighters like Tyson Fury and Carl Frampton.

Dubai police announced that Kinahan was apprehended following intensive search and surveillance operations on Wednesday, April 15. The arrest was part of a broader initiative to address cross-border crime, facilitated by a judicial file received from Irish authorities detailing Kinahan's alleged criminal activities.

Within just 48 hours of the warrant's issuance, Dubai Public Prosecution had issued an arrest order, initiating the legal procedures necessary for Kinahan’s extradition. Gardaí have acknowledged the Irish national's arrest, aligning with the bi-lateral extradition agreement between Ireland and the United Arab Emirates.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin commented on the arrest, emphasizing its significance in solidifying strong extradition relations with the UAE, and noted that due processes will follow. Jim O'Callaghan, Ireland's Minister for Justice, also expressed satisfaction with the arrest, acknowledging that it was the result of diligent efforts on the part of multiple parties.

Kinahan had previously been linked to criminal activities, as highlighted during the Regency Hotel shooting in 2016, which claimed the life of one of his associates and was part of a violent feud costing multiple lives. He had been residing in Dubai, having reportedly relocated from Costa del Sol in Spain after the shooting incident.

This development underscores the ongoing commitment of international law enforcement to tackle transnational organized crime and reflects a coordinated effort between Ireland and the UAE.
