Ex‑Kenyan Governor Convicted in Brutal Murder of Pregnant Student
Former Migori county governor Okoth Obado has been found guilty of orchestrating the murder of 26‑year‑old university student Sharon Otieno, who was pregnant when authorities discovered her body outside a small town in western Kenya.
The case sparked nationwide protests, drawing attention to the alarmingly high rates of gender‑based violence in the country. A 2022 national survey found that almost a third of Kenyan women reported experiencing physical violence, underscoring the urgency of addressing this issue.
Police investigations hinged on a journalist’s eyewitness account, a blocked GPS tracker on a vehicle used in the abduction, and circumstantial evidence showing a calculated plan to conceal the crime. Judge Cecilia Githua said Obado supplied the motive, funds and instructions, while co‑accomplices facilitated the execution and managed logistics.
The three defendants are now in custody as authorities prepare for sentencing. A lawyer representing the victim’s family expressed relief that justice had finally been served, saying, "We are happy with the conviction. We believe that justice has at last been served to Sharon."
