Tamuna Museridze’s eight-year journey to uncover her origins took a remarkable twist when she discovered her biological father had been on her Facebook friend list for three years. Fueled by a blend of determination and personal curiosity, Tamuna began her search in 2016 after finding a misleading birth certificate while clearing out her late adoptive mother’s belongings. Understanding her past became imperative as she started piecing together the circumstances of her adoption.
The journey was fraught with emotional challenges, particularly after an initial disheartening conversation with the woman she believed to be her biological mother. “She screamed at me, denying any connection, and I was stunned by her anger,” Tamuna recalled. Undeterred, she took to social media to uncover the truth, creating a Facebook group called "Vedezeb" to seek her birth parents and document her findings.
Through her persistent inquiries, Tamuna stumbled upon a harrowing baby trafficking scandal that had afflicted many Georgians, where parents were misled into believing their newborns had died, only for the infants to be sold instead. As a journalist, Tamuna had bravely covered similar stories, but this investigation had turned deeply personal.
A breakthrough came summer, when a social media post led her to a potential link—a woman believed to be her birth mother. Following a series of DNA tests confirming her family ties, Tamuna gained the name of her father, Gurgen Khorava. “I couldn’t believe how all of this was unfolding,” she recounted, revealing the mixture of shock and elation she felt.
With Gurgen’s name, Tamuna quickly found him on Facebook, realizing he was not only aware of her investigative work but had been following her story. The unexpected connection catalyzed a meeting in Zugdidi, Georgia, where the two embraced and began exploring their shared history.
The emotional reunion allowed them to connect over family and cultural traditions, with Tamuna discovering the joys of meeting her half-siblings and extended family. As they celebrated their newfound relationship, Tamuna confronted lingering questions about her adoption and learned the painful truth from her biological mother—with whom she reluctantly reconnected—that she was not stolen, but given up due to societal pressures and shame.
Although their communication ended on strained terms, Tamuna embraced her newfound family bonds and the revelations of her past. “If I had to do it all over again, I would,” she stated confidently. Her journey, while marked by challenges and heartache, revealed the power of persistence and connection in unraveling the mysteries of identity and belonging.
