As heavy rainfall unleashed widespread floods in Mexico, at least 27 individuals have lost their lives, with several others reported missing. The deluge resulted in devastating landslides and the destruction of homes, vehicles, and essential infrastructure.

The worst-affected area is Hidalgo, where 16 of the reported fatalities occurred. Fast-moving waters have caused unprecedented damage, leaving thousands of homes compromised across the region, and effectively blocking highways with debris.

In response to this disaster, President Claudia Sheinbaum has deployed over 5,400 personnel to assist with evacuations, road clearances, and providing emergency aid to impacted communities. “We are working to support the population, open roads and restore electrical service,” the president stated in a social media announcement.

Naval troops are also contributing to rescue operations and ensuring the safety of those who have been affected. In Puebla state alone, 80,000 individuals have faced severe weather conditions leading to at least nine deaths and five people who are missing.

Jose Cervantes, a local business owner, detailed the dramatic flooding impact, saying, “No one was prepared for this. The flood reached a height of one and a half meters. Everything was flooded, the dining room and the entire restaurant, the kitchen, the bathroom, the games room, the private area. Everything is in terrible condition.”

A continued state of emergency and mobilization of resources is underway as Mexican authorities strive to support affected regions and restore normalcy amidst this climate-induced disaster.
