Overnight drone strikes between Russia and Ukraine resulted in the deaths of at least five people. Officials in Kyiv have confirmed that a massive Russian drone strike on the city caused two fatalities and injured six others.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, also impacted at least two residential buildings, inciting fires and disrupting utility services.
In retaliation, officials in Russia reported that Ukrainian strikes in the Rostov region killed three individuals.
This escalation comes on the heels of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressing support for proposed changes to a US-led peace plan aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.
Kyiv's military administration chief, Tymur Tkachenko, noted a fire broke out at a high-rise building in the Dniprovskyi district, necessitating an evacuation of residents. Firefighters managed to rescue 18 people, including three children.
Another apartment building in the Pechersk district suffered significant damage due to the drone strikes, but the fire was quickly extinguished, as reported by Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko.
In response to the attacks, Ukraine's air defense units were activated, with explosions reported throughout Kyiv. Citizens were advised to seek refuge in underground shelters.
The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine confirmed an extensive attack on the nation’s energy infrastructure, stating that assessments and restoration efforts would be initiated once safety allows.
In the Rostov region of Russia, the number of fatalities from a Ukrainian strike rose to three, with further injuries reported. Reacting to the situation, the acting governor, Yuri Sliusar, conveyed deep sorrow over the incidents.
The recent exchanges of strikes come amid ongoing discussions of peace talks involving US and Ukrainian officials, with Ukrainian allies proposing necessary amendments to the peace plan that were previously rejected for being too favorable to Russian positions.
President Zelensky hinted at positive developments, stating that elements supportive of a resolution were now included in the proposed framework, expressing optimism that these changes could lead towards an achievable peace.
However, a Kremlin representative dismissed the revised plan, branding it as unconstructive, and tensions continue to mount as the conflict stretches on.
