US Justice Department Investigates TV Networks After Trump Pool Coverage Boycott

The U.S. Justice Department has issued subpoenas to ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox News, probing whether the networks’ decision to halt coverage of President Donald Trump‑related events may violate federal antitrust laws under the Sherman Act.

Last month the five outlets paused their participation in the White House press pool in response to the administration’s withdrawal of credentials for three media outlets – CNN, MS Now and Politico – a move the Trump administration said was prompted by alleged “fiction or lies.” The ban was later lifted after a judge ruled it infringed First Amendment rights, and the question arose whether the boycott from other networks could create a de facto monopoly on presidential coverage.

The DOJ’s Antitrust Division seeks communications and records that might show the networks coordinated the pause, a practice that could set a precedent for restricting media access to public offices. The investigation underscores the delicate balance between newsroom independence and government influence, especially when reporting on policy areas such as climate change, whose coverage can be critical during executive transitions.

So far, the networks have not released statements about the investigation. The outcome will clarify whether coordinated media actions during a political crisis are permissible or an unlawful restraint of competition.
