Zambia's president has weighed into a cultural debate that has erupted online after the president of Ghana arrived in Zambia wearing a traditional outfit called a fugu. Some Zambians mockingly called it a blouse.
However, Zambia's leader hit back by sharing his love for the design, saying he would be ordering more of that stuff for himself, in a video posted on X from the Ghana–Zambia Business Forum held in Lusaka this week.
Ghana's foreign minister commented that the social media buzz reflects a growing enthusiasm among young people to reclaim their cultural roots. This has led to initiatives like Fugu Friday in Ghana, where citizens don traditional apparel.
President Hichilema's support for the fugu comes after a wave of mockery online, with some Zambians humorously commenting on the outfit's appearance. In response, Ghanaian officials emphasized the importance of the fugu as a symbol of African identity and dignity. Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa noted that this renewed interest among youth signifies a renaissance of the African personality.
In his remarks, Hichilema stated, We'll be ordering more fugu from Ghana following the social media conversations, demonstrating a commitment to celebrating and promoting traditional attire. The event serves not only as a cultural exchange but also as a reminder of the importance of respecting and uplifting African heritage.
