PROVIDENCE, R.I. — New footage from the Brown University shooting, which resulted in the deaths of two students, has been released by city officials, who have taken care to redact graphic content to protect the privacy and well-being of those affected.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley stated, It is critically important that our city remains transparent and accountable, adhering to the Access to Public Records Act while also considering the emotional impact this material may have on victims and their families who are still healing from this tragedy.
Following the shooting incident in December 2022, news organizations sought access to body camera footage and audio records, prompting the release of 20 minutes of footage that captured chaotic moments during the response. The video appears to depict officers attempting to assess the situation and ensure the safety of evacuated students while describing the ongoing risks, as they worked to identify the shooter.
In the newly published audio, an officer can be heard communicating the immediate concerns: We have confirmed gunshots. We do have a victim, but we do not know where they are. As the scene unfolded, there were reports of another update indicating a suspect dressed in black was on the loose.
The tragic incident unfolded on December 13 when the shooter, Claudio Neves Valente, targeted students during a study session, fatally shooting 19-year-old Ella Cook and 18-year-old MukhammadAziz Umurzokov. This was followed by another incident where Valente killed Nuno F.G. Loureiro, an MIT professor. Investigations revealed Valente had meticulously planned the attack and left behind recordings detailing his actions. In a devastating aftermath, law enforcement found him deceased shortly after the events in a storage unit in New Hampshire.
The Providence city government held off on releasing these materials to show respect for the victims' families, waiting until after a memorial service took place on campus last week.
