Charges Against South Africa Police Intelligence Chief Dropped
South African prosecutors have withdrawn fraud and corruption charges against Lt‑Gen Dumisani Khumalo, head of Crime Intelligence, and six other officers. The charges stemmed from an alleged unlawful appointment of civilian Dineo Mokwele to a senior intelligence role.
KhUmalo and his colleagues were arrested in June, but they denied misconduct and were never suspended. The case was formally dismissed in Pretoria after the chief prosecutor reviewed the evidence and found it lacking.
South Africa’s police has long struggled with political interference and corruption, and the Madlanga Commission—established by President Cyril Ramaphosa—continues to investigate alleged infiltration of organised crime into government and police ranks.
Following the withdrawal, Khumalo expressed relief, saying the “truth at least is out.” He emphasized his 20‑plus year service in various police units before becoming Crime Intelligence head in 2022.
