Cake Picnic Delights Sydney with a Whimsical Gathering of Sweetness
Welcome to Cake Picnic, Sydney edition. This viral event, which has already sold out in cities such as San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles, has finally reached the shores of Australia. Following a successful event in Melbourne earlier this month featuring 1,600 cakes, the excitement was palpable as Sydney welcomed its turn on Saturday.
Organizer Elisa Sunga, a part-time hobby baker and full-time Google employee, expressed her delight at the idea of a cake tour. I had no idea that I could ever go on tour for cake, she laughs, highlighting the whimsical nature of the event that brings together cake lovers from all backgrounds.
The concept is simple yet effective. Sunga initially invited friends to a small gathering with the stipulation that everyone brings a cake. What began as an attempt to make sure everyone had a taste resulted in nearly 200 attendees and over 180 cakes devoured. The success of this gathering sparked the idea for Cake Picnic, which transcends borders and creates a unique sense of community around baking.
On Saturday, the Royal Botanic Garden was filled with an enthusiastic crowd of over 500 individuals, ready to showcase their cakes. The event required that all cakes must be at least 20cm (8 inches) wide and 7.5cm (3 inches) tall, ensuring a colorful and impressive display. Highlights included a meter-high life-sized swan cake and a stunning bouquet of flowers made entirely of cupcakes.
Participants included seasoned bakers, influencers, and newcomers, all united by their love for cake and creativity. The atmosphere was vibrant and inclusive, with smiles and delicious treats shared amongst the crowd. With a plethora of flavors ranging from coffee pecan torte to savory focaccia cakes, there was something for everyone. One ecstatic participant, Eunice Lim, expressed the joy of the event perfectly: It's so vibrant and inclusive; there's no judgment here—just people and cakes of all shapes and sizes.
Elisa Sunga’s journey reflects a desire not just to share cake but to foster community connection. With her background rooted in savory Filipino dishes, her exploration of baking has become therapeutic and a way to connect with others in an increasingly digital world. She views Cake Picnic as a perfect avenue for people to gather, create, and enjoy the simple pleasure of cake.
As the cakes were elegantly presented and devoured in delightful chaos, Cake Picnic stood as a sweet reminder of joy, creativity, and the simple pleasure of coming together, one slice at a time.
