Australian Federal Police (AFP) are investigating allegations that Israeli forces forced a group of activists to endure rape and torture after they were detained during a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla.

Following the activists’ meeting with Foreign Minister Penny Wong and senior officials, Wong said the government would launch an independent, transparent inquiry into the accusations of kidnapping, abuse, and assault.

Israeli officials have denied any wrongdoing, stating there is no credible evidence to support the activists’ claims and that no formal complaint has been filed with the embassy.

Eleven Australians were among the hundreds of activists seized on 18 May when the flotilla was intercepted by Israeli forces. The activists, part of the Global Sumud group, allege they were subjected to severe mistreatment, while Israeli officials classify them as “professional provocateurs.”

The AFP has confirmed it has begun inquiries and will provide an update when appropriate. The case underscores the broader conflict over humanitarian aid access and the treatment of activists in the Israel-Gaza context.
