In brief

An Israeli airstrike on the Kuwait Specialty Field Hospital has resulted in the death of a security guard and multiple injuries among patients, compounding the ongoing medical crisis in Gaza amidst the ongoing conflict.

In an alarming development during the ongoing conflict, an Israeli airstrike targeted the Kuwait Specialty Field Hospital in southern Gaza, resulting in the death of a security guard and injuries to ten patients. Dr. Suhaib al-Hamss, the director of the facility, reported that the guard was killed while protecting the hospital entrance. This attack follows a recent strike on the Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City, which Israel claimed was targeting a Hamas command center, although it provided no supporting evidence. The Israeli military is currently reviewing the reports regarding the strike on the field hospital. Dr. al-Hamss described the severity of the attack, stating, “It was a powerful strike. Everything fell over.” He also highlighted the urgent medical needs of the population, noting that the hospital treats approximately 3,500 patients daily. The actions of the Israeli military have severely impacted Gaza’s healthcare system, with the World Health Organization recently revealing that 33 of Gaza's 36 hospitals have sustained damage due to ongoing violence. Only 21 hospitals remain partially operational, and there is a critical shortage of medical supplies, exacerbated by six weeks of blocked aid deliveries by Israel.Additionally, Israel has accused Hamas of using medical facilities for military purposes; however, Dr. al-Hamss insisted that the medical center remains focused solely on providing healthcare. The facility had shared its location with Israeli authorities prior to the strike, and staff members are vetted to ensure their neutrality concerning political affiliations. Despite these efforts, the escalating conflict continues to pose grave threats to civilian lives and the already fragile medical infrastructure in Gaza.As the conflict escalates, the international community remains concerned about the humanitarian implications of these attacks, demanding accountability and a renewed commitment to protecting healthcare facilities in conflict zones.
