Dinosaur Debate: New Zealand's Boom Boom Sculpture Sparks Community Discussion

In New Zealand's scenic Taupō, a seven-meter tall stainless steel dinosaur sculpture named Boom Boom is the center of a heated discussion, sparking divided opinions among locals. Commissioned by the Taupō Sculpture Trust and created by artist Gregor Kregar, the mirror-finish sculpture has been met with praise and skepticism since its recent unveiling.

Some residents have enthusiastically labeled Boom Boom as "fabulous," expressing that it encourages dialogue about the importance of art in public spaces. "Fantastic! Getting people talking about art. Broadening the conversation," wrote one supporter on social media.

Conversely, the sculpture's installation has drawn criticism, particularly due to its cost of $100,000 funded by local ratepayers. Some community members have voiced concerns over whether such a significant sum might have been better spent on local services. Kregar, hailing from Slovenia, noted that the intention behind his work is to spark interaction and connection among the public, remarking, “It’s really hard to hate a sculpture of a dinosaur.”

Opinions about Boom Boom have also highlighted its relevance to the local culture. Critics question its connection to Taupō, recently named New Zealand's most beautiful town, whereas Kregar contends that the sculpture's base is designed to reflect the region's volcanic history, steeped in natural beauty and geological significance.

This installation's controversy does not seem to bother those behind the project; they believe conversations triggered by the statue ultimately enhance the community's identity. Kim Gillies, secretary of the Taupō Sculpture Trust, emphasized that selecting Boom Boom was a deliberate choice to promote the town and create memorable art rather than opting for tradition: "Safe is a bit boring, right?"

With the town's residents engaging in spirited debate, Boom Boom may transform from a divisive topic into a beloved landmark representing the blend of art, history, and cultural pride in Taupō.
