Serbian Preservationists Challenge Trump Family Hotel Project Amid Ethical Concerns

Over the past year, the Trump family has been actively engaged in international real estate developments, often alongside foreign governments, raising serious ethical questions. However, only one of these ventures has spurred a criminal investigation into local authorities. This inquiry arises from a determined group of cultural preservationists in Serbia who opposed a luxury hotel planned by Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law.

The ambitious project, valued at $500 million, is set to replace a bombed-out building in Belgrade, a poignant reminder of the suffering endured during the 1999 conflict. Following Trump's re-election, the Serbian government moved to rescind the site's designation as a culturally protected landmark, clearing the way for the hotel project to proceed with the Trump brand attached.

Yet, architects and cultural historians from the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments quickly condemned the government's decision, asserting it violated existing laws. "The property’s cultural status can only be altered with expert approval from our institute," stated Estela Radonjic Zivkov, the former deputy director of the institute, who faced pressure from state intelligence to remain silent. Her refusal to back down signifies the intense political interest surrounding the project.
