Smokey Robinson Insists on Innocence Amidst Sexual Assault Investigation
The Motown legend finds himself under scrutiny after allegations of sexual assault from four anonymous plaintiffs, who seek extensive damages.
Motown legend Smokey Robinson is currently under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department following serious accusations of sexual assault. The inquiry comes after a formal lawsuit was filed last week by four anonymous housekeepers—who identified themselves as Jane Doe 1, 2, 3, and 4—claiming sexual battery, false imprisonment, negligence, and gender violence against the 85-year-old artist.
In response to the claims, Robinson has categorically denied all accusations through his lawyer, Christopher Frost, who argues that the lawsuit is simply an attempt to exploit Robinson's fame and wealth. Frost expressed his eagerness for the police investigation, stating, "exposure to the truth is a powerful thing." He maintained confidence that the inquiry will ultimately clear Robinson’s name, labeling the allegations as a desperate effort that fails to tarnish the musician’s reputation.
The sheriff’s department has confirmed that its Special Victims Bureau has initiated a preliminary investigation, though they emphasized that it is still in the early stages. The plaintiffs, whose identities have been protected due to fears of career repercussions and potential immigration issues, filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on May 6, detailing various incidents they claim date back to 2006.
The defendants are seeking at least $50 million in damages, alleging that Robinson pressured them into sexual encounters over the years. The women’s attorneys held a press conference following the filing, branding Robinson a "serial and sick rapist" who "must be stopped." In contrast, Robinson’s legal team described the public event as an unfortunate attempt to enlist public support in a media spectacle rather than a serious legal matter.
Frost has indicated that further legal proceedings will be forthcoming, noting that Robinson's defense aims to have the case dismissed. He asks the public to reserve judgment until all facts are laid out during the investigation. Robinson, known for his immense contributions to the music industry with hits like "My Girl" and "Tears of a Clown," holds significant records in both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, intensifying public interest in the ongoing investigation.
