Haidilao Responds to Outrage with Compensation After Disturbing Incident in Shanghai Branch
Chinese hotpot chain Haidilao compensates over 4,000 diners following a viral video of teens urinating in broth.
In a recent scandal, Haidilao, the largest hotpot chain in China, announced that it would compensate more than 4,000 patrons who visited one of its Shanghai branches where two drunken teenagers urinated into a hotpot broth. The alarming event took place in late February and gained notoriety after a video capturing the incident circulated on social media.
Authorities detained the 17-year-olds involved shortly after the event, but it remains unclear who filmed the unsettling footage. Fortunately, there is no indication that the affected broth was consumed by any diners, which may provide some comfort to those affected.
In response to the incident, Haidilao has issued a public apology and taken immediate action to ensure the safety and satisfaction of its customers. The company reported that all hotpot equipment and dining utensils at the location have been replaced and disinfected, along with any other cutlery utilized during that period.
Initially, the company's management was unaware of the incident until days afterward when videos began surfacing online. It took them a week to identify the specific outlet responsible, given the multitude of locations they manage in the city.
In a heartfelt statement, Haidilao acknowledged that the distress caused by the incident could not be entirely remedied through compensation. They are committed to taking full responsibility for the situation. Customers who dined at the establishment between February 24 and March 8 will receive a full refund as well as additional cash compensation that equals ten times their original bill.
Founded in Jianyang, Sichuan province, Haidilao has expanded rapidly since its inception and currently operates over 1,000 restaurants globally. The chain is celebrated for its unique offerings, such as providing manicures for women and candy floss for children while waiting, fostering a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
