Three police officers were killed and two others critically injured in a shooting in the US state of Pennsylvania, following a domestic-related investigation, according to authorities.

Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris confirmed that the gunman was fatally shot by police during the incident.

The shooting occurred just after 2:00 PM local time. Images from the scene depicted a police officer being airlifted in a medical helicopter.

This event forced nearby schools in Spring Grove, a small town with a population of around 2,500, to briefly implement a shelter-in-place order; however, officials later stated there was no immediate danger to the public.

The tragic shooting took place in rural York County within North Codorus Township, approximately 100 miles east of Philadelphia, as officers were following up on an investigation initiated the previous day.

Authorities have remained tight-lipped about many details as the investigation continues. Celebration activities have been postponed in the area to respect the situation.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro visited the area and expressed his condolences to the families of the slain officers, stating, We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country, emphasizing the need for societal improvements to curb violence.

In tribute to the fallen officers, Governor Shapiro has ordered that all flags at state buildings be lowered to half-mast. Additionally, statements from FBI Director Kash Patel regards the agency's support for local law enforcement during this challenging time.
