At least 36 people have died, including children, in a crush at a political rally in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, state officials report.
Tens of thousands had gathered on Saturday at a campaign event for actor-turned-politician Vijay, in the southern Karur district. The rally faced delays, and images from local media showed people fainting amidst the packed crowd.
Politician Senthil Balaji confirmed the deaths and stated that over 50 others were injured. Among the deceased are at least 16 women, nine men, and six children. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin mentioned that some were transported to hospitals for treatment after fainting in the crush, prompting requests for additional assistance from nearby districts.
Compensation of one million rupees (approximately $11,300) will be offered to the families of those who lost their lives, and an inquiry into the incident is forthcoming.
In an online statement, Vijay extended his deepest sympathies and condolences to the bereaved families, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the unfortunate incident through a post on X.
Incidents of deadly crowd crushes are unfortunately common in India, with several similar tragedies occurring this year alone, including at the famous Kumbh Mela festival and outside a cricket stadium.
