Donatella Versace Announces Departure from Creative Director Role
Donatella Versace steps down after nearly three decades, passing the baton to Dario Vitale while embracing a new ambassador role.
After almost 30 years at the forefront of Versace, Donatella Versace has announced her resignation from the position of creative director of the iconic fashion house. Having taken over the role in 1997 following the tragic murder of her brother Gianni, Donatella has played a pivotal role in shaping Versace's identity through numerous fashion campaigns, hotel designs, and luxury goods.
Dario Vitale, former design director for Miu Miu, is set to succeed her in this esteemed position, while Donatella will shift her focus to a new role as brand ambassador. This transition is part of a broader strategic plan, as revealed by Capri Holdings, the current owner of Versace, which acquired the brand for €2 billion (£1.67 billion) in 2018. Rumors are circulating that the Prada Group is considering purchasing Versace from Capri, adding intrigue to the brand's future.
In an official statement from Capri Holdings, the company expressed gratitude for Donatella’s invaluable contributions, alluding to her as integral to the brand’s global success. They also praised Vitale's design vision as crucial for the company's continued growth.
Taking to Instagram, Donatella shared her emotional reflections, expressing, “It has been the greatest honour of my life to carry on my brother Gianni's legacy. Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart.” She also voiced her excitement about welcoming Vitale, emphasizing her commitment to mentoring the next generation of designers.
Over her prolific career, Donatella has dressed numerous global icons including Madonna, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga, and is renowned for her signature vibrant designs and striking platinum blonde hair. The Versace brand, founded in Milan in 1978 by Donatella and her brothers, has generated impressively for Capri Holdings, accounting for 20% of its projected €5.2 billion (£4.3 billion) revenue for 2024.
