Donatella Versace Announces Departure as Creative Director
Iconic fashion designer to transition to new role as brand ambassador.
In a significant shift for the iconic luxury fashion house, Donatella Versace, who has served as its creative director since 1997, has announced her departure from the role. The transition comes after nearly 30 years and following the tragic murder of her brother, Gianni Versace, who founded the brand in 1978. Managing a series of high-profile fashion campaigns, Donatella leaves an indelible mark on the fashion industry and will now assume the position of brand ambassador.
This leadership change coincides with growing interest from the Prada Group in acquiring Versace from the Capri Holdings group, which bought the fashion label in 2018 for approximately €2 billion (£1.67 billion). In statements from Capri Holdings, the company acknowledged Donatella's contributions to the brand’s global success, indicating that her long-term dedication to philanthropic endeavors aligns with her new role.
Donatella expressed her emotions in an Instagram post, stating that it has been "the greatest honour of my life to carry on my brother Gianni's legacy." She emphasized her excitement about the future, welcoming Dario Vitale—formerly of Miu Miu—as the new creative director. Recognizing the importance of fostering new talent, Donatella feels optimistic about Versace's potential under Vitale's expertise.
Notably, Versace has gained notoriety for dressing numerous global icons, including Madonna, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga. Donatella famously designed the striking green jungle dress for Jennifer Lopez, which became a fashion milestone, and crafted a stunning gown for Michelle Obama for her final state dinner in 2016.
The brand, well-recognized for its bold patterns and vibrant aesthetics, is a reflection of Donatella's personal style and has remained a pivotal player in the luxury clothing market. The fashion label is projected to contribute 20% of Capri's projected €5.2 billion (£4.3 billion) revenue for 2024.
