In brief
An overnight earthquake shakes Naples, prompting residents to sleep outdoors amidst fears of further tremors. While the tremor caused partial building collapses and disrupted power, efforts are underway to assess safety in the affected areas.
In the early hours of Thursday, a significant 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck Naples, Italy, causing widespread concern as many residents chose to spend the night outdoors in an attempt to stay safe. The earthquake occurred at 01:25 local time at a shallow depth of just three kilometers, as reported by Italian seismologists. The US Geological Survey recorded the tremor slightly lower at 4.2 magnitude but noted it occurred at a greater depth of ten kilometers.Residents of Naples, particularly in the nearby town of Pozzuoli close to the quake's epicenter, experienced disruption, with power outages affecting parts of the city. Among the reports of damage, one individual was rescued from the rubble of a partially collapsed house in Pozzuoli. The tremor reverberated through various regions in Campania, sparking fears of aftershocks which were confirmed by reports of at least two minor ones following the main quake.Photographic evidence captured the aftermath, revealing a damaged residence and a car with shattered glass, highlighting the earthquake's impact. In response to the natural disaster, local authorities have established a rescue co-ordination center to assess the extent of the damage. Schools in Pozzuoli and two adjacent neighborhoods will remain closed as building stability checks are instituted to ensure the safety of the community. This recent quake serves as a reminder of Naples' location on the geologically active Phlegraean Fields, a volcanic region that poses ongoing risks of seismic activity for its residents.
