In brief

In Santorini, Greece, a series of frequent earthquakes has prompted the evacuation of over 13,000 of its 15,500 residents, leaving the island eerily quiet as authorities and experts assess the ongoing risks and stabilize measures.

Amidst a wave of nearly constant seismic activity since January 25, the picturesque island of Santorini has witnessed a dramatic shift from its bustling tourist season. February, usually a quieter month for the island known for its stunning sunsets and whitewashed buildings, has turned into an unsettling experience for its inhabitants as over 80% have chosen to flee in response to a barrage of tremors.Approximately 13,000 residents have left the island, leaving behind a stark contrast to the throngs of over three million tourists who typically visit each year. While a few adventurous travelers continue to explore Santorini's unique charm, the streets now echo with an unusual silence. Most visitors currently are from Asia, drawn by the island's renown, despite the perilous circumstances. The seismic disturbance escalated dramatically with a notable magnitude-5.2 earthquake that hit northeast of Santorini, along with smaller tremors reported optimistically—160 quakes measuring above 4 in magnitude have rattled the area since the start of February, compared to only 90 similar events recorded throughout the entirety of the previous year. Vassilis Karastathis, director at the Institute of Geodynamics at the National Observatory of Athens, indicated that although there appears to be signs of stabilization, predictions remain uncertain, emphasizing that the shaking could persist for weeks.Authorities have taken comprehensive precautions, suspending educational activities, prohibiting large indoor gatherings, and deploying emergency services to the island. In anticipation of further catastrophic earthquakes, emergency landing crafts are at the ready for potential evacuations, and landslide fears have resulted in areas being restricted to ensure public safety. In the face of this uncertain crisis, local mental health professionals from the Red Cross have provided crucial support to anxious residents, while priests have conducted prayers in hopes of bringing an end to the relentless tremors. Santorini's iconic charm now hinges on not just its geological stability, but also the resilience of its community amid nature's unforgiving whims.
