In brief
Lanzarote has faced dramatic flooding following intense rainfall precipitated by Storm Olivier, prompting a state of emergency and significant disruptions.
In a sudden and alarming weather event, Lanzarote, one of the popular Canary Islands, experienced severe flooding following torrential rain on Saturday. Within a mere two hours, the island saw a staggering 6 cm (2.4 inches) of rain, leading local authorities to declare a state of emergency to manage the crisis.Fortunately, Spanish authorities reported no injuries related to the flooding, and by Sunday morning, the state of emergency was lifted. However, the repercussions were significant, with emergency services inundated with calls. “We have been working all night, attending 300 calls overnight, many of them in Arrecife and Teguise,” stated Enrique Espinosa, the head of Lanzarote's emergency services.Particularly hard-hit areas included San Bartolomé, as dramatic social media footage revealed a torrent of floodwaters surging beneath bridges, causing vehicles to become stranded amidst the chaos. Emergency teams responded to over 150 incidents in Costa Teguise and around 70 in Arrecife. The Canary Islands, with their dry climates and volcanic terrain, are often susceptible to flooding when intense rainfall occurs, as the soil struggles to absorb the sudden influx of water. The recent deluge occurred following Storm Olivier, which swept across the Canaries, mainland Spain, and Portugal, prompting several weather alerts, with Spain’s meteorological service issuing warnings for a variety of weather conditions throughout the coming days.As recovery efforts commence, the unfolding situation in Lanzarote serves as a stark reminder of the impacts of climate-induced extreme weather phenomena, underlining the need for effective infrastructure and emergency preparedness in vulnerable areas.
