In brief
Authorities confirm the rescue followed extensive search efforts, highlighting the challenges of dense bushland in the area.
Hadi Nazari, who is 23 years old, was rescued after a harrowing 13 days lost in the Kosciuszko National Park, situated approximately 240 miles south of Sydney. The experienced hiker had embarked on his adventure on December 26, known as Boxing Day in Australia. When he did not arrive at a pre-arranged campground, his friends alerted the police around 8:45 PM that evening.Nazari was last seen around six hours prior to his disappearance, having chosen to travel alone along the Hannels Spur trail. Following his absence, a massive search operation was initiated, involving around 400 personnel conducting extensive air and land searches over nearly two weeks. Authorities remained cautiously optimistic throughout the endeavor, as Nazari was equipped with essential camping supplies in his backpack.Throughout the search, crucial evidence was uncovered, including rubbish and hiking poles in the vicinity of the Kosciuszko River on New Year’s Eve. Later, traces such as a lighter, camera, and remnants of a campfire were discovered near the Geehi River. The search proved arduous, compounded by the region's thick foliage, making visibility challenging for rescuers. Finally, at approximately 3:15 PM on Wednesday, a group of hikers near Blue Lake, roughly six miles from the designated campground, encountered Nazari. He called out to them, indicating he was lost and in need of water. The hikers promptly contacted emergency services, leading to Nazari's airlift to a command post for medical evaluation. The remarkable story of survival underscores the importance of preparedness and awareness in the wilderness, even for skilled adventurers navigating the great outdoors.
