In brief

The FDA's recent approval of another generic form of mifepristone, the abortion pill, by Evita Solutions has stirred significant controversy among anti-abortion advocates. While the approval is a routine regulatory action, it has drawn criticism, especially from those associated with the Trump administration. Mifepristone's accessibility has already been expanded in recent years, raising ongoing tensions in the abortion rights debate. Despite its FDA backing, access to the drug remains restricted due to various state laws against abortion.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The FDA has given the green light to a new generic version of mifepristone, the abortion pill primarily used to end pregnancies through 10 weeks. The approval was issued to Evita Solutions and quickly incited backlash from anti-abortion groups, particularly those aligned with the previous Trump administration.

Students for Life Action, opposed to abortion rights, expressed their discontent, labeling the approval as a stain on the Trump presidency and highlighting a perceived deep state crisis within the FDA.

This development comes as pressure mounts on Trump’s health officials, such as Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., to reassess the long-established approval of mifepristone, which has been deemed safe by FDA reviewers since its original sanctioning in 2000.

In a communication to Republican attorneys general, Kennedy and FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary assured that a thorough safety review of mifepristone is underway.

The FDA had previously allowed online prescriptions and mail delivery of mifepristone during the Biden administration, significantly enhancing access to the drug, which has been fiercely contested by abortion opponents.

Approval for generic drugs like mifepristone is typically quite standard at the FDA, but Evita Solutions’ application had been in the pipeline for four years before this approval was granted.

Evita Solutions emphasized on their website their belief in providing accessible, effective, and compassionate abortion care. Despite the new approval, mifepristone's availability could face challenges due to state-imposed abortion restrictions, leaving many communities without access to essential reproductive health services.
