Robert De Niro has publicly voiced his full support for his daughter, Airyn, who recently came out as transgender. In an interview with LGBTQ+ magazine Them, Airyn fondly recounts stepping into her new identity. The esteemed actor reaffirmed his love for Airyn, stating, “I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter.” De Niro found no issue with this transition, emphasizing, “I don't know what the big deal is. I love all my children.”At 29, Airyn has begun her transition journey. She conveyed the sentiment that "there's a difference between being visible and being seen," sharing her quest for authentic recognition. She was inspired by figures like actress Laverne Cox and aims to enhance trans visibility while honoring her black queer roots. "Trans women being honest and open... in public spaces like social media... I'm like, you know what? Maybe it's not too late for me," she remarked.Reflecting on her childhood, Airyn mentioned how her parents, including De Niro and Toukie Smith, prioritized her privacy, allowing her to enjoy a relatively normal upbringing despite her family's high profile. The conversation surrounding transgender rights remains poignant, especially as the UK grapples with legal definitions of gender identity post a recent Supreme Court ruling. As discussions regarding transgender rights evolve, Airyn's journey sheds light on the necessity of support and visibility in the ongoing fight for equality.
