In brief

In a surprising move that cements the growing relationship between Moscow and Pyongyang, Russian President Vladimir Putin has donated more than 70 animals, including a lion and two brown bears, to North Korea's primary zoo. The animals were delivered directly to the North Korean capital in a cargo plane by Russia’s environment minister, Alexander Kozlov. This initiative follows a recent joint military engagement between the two countries, showcasing their budding alliance as they face international sanctions.

The animal shipment from Moscow also featured two yaks, five cockatoos, numerous pheasants, and mandarin ducks, highlighting the extent of this gesture. This isn't the first occasion that Russia has contributed to North Korea's zoo; earlier in the year, Putin gifted Kim Jong Un 24 pure-bred horses, reportedly in gratitude for artillery supplies provided by the North. The recent gift from the Russian president is believed to be a strategic move as both Russia and North Korea navigate increasingly complex international relations and seek mutual support, particularly in light of Russia's ongoing conflict in Ukraine and North Korea's ambitions in space technology and missile development.Amid rising ties, official visits have underscored this alliance, notably during Putin's June visit to North Korea, where he and Kim reached agreements centered on mutual defense against perceived aggression from Western powers. Alongside gifts of exotic animals, Putin also brought luxury items including a Russian Aurus limousine and a tea set, reinforcing their diplomatic rapport. As tensions continue with the West, the alliance between Putin and Kim deepens, with China also remaining a critical player in this unfolding geopolitical landscape.
